Retro sweet of the week!

This weeks sweet is a real Pick ‘n’ Mix classic. We’re sure there were a few of these in your paper bag back in the good old days, and they are still a firm favourite here at Chewbz HQ.

As far as foamy sweets go, these are up there with the best. They smell and taste so delicious, we only wish they counted as one of our five a day ;).

This weeks Retro sweet of the week is…

Banana Jar copy

Yummy, juicy Foam Bananas!

Lovely as these were, they never often managed to get into my sweetie selection. In the battle of the foam sweets I was a loyal soldier for the foam Shrimp army 😉

  2. Jane says:

We had these at our weekly poker game last week, they went down a treat and us “older” players remember them well from childhood.

  3. sarah williams says:

The idea of banana sweets makes my mouth so water. It would bring back memories of the good old days…i.e. when I was young, single and carefree…. and when I didn’t have fie young children to look after!

  5. Darren Jackson says:

These remind me of my “uncle” who used to perv up me and my pals using these yellow beauties. Now I can get them without having to touch his soldier.

  6. Emma Warner says:

These sweets completely remind me of when I was little and spending my pocket money on penny sweets in the local newsagent. Loved the banana foam sweets! 🙂

  7. Rachel says:

Mmmmmmm, just thinking of them is making my mouth water! Getting pick ‘n’ mix was just not worth it if they didn’t have bananas (once put every single sweet back in a strop because I discovered at the end they didn’t have any. Not sure if the shop staff were happy but serves them right for running out! Never made that mistake again, bananas first every time).

  8. Julie Davies says:

well my username on facebook is ‘Julie B Ananadog Davies’ and @buddybanana on twitter…I’m a banana addict and my dog is even more of a banana addict! lol

  9. BRO says:

Myself and my friends were given these by our favourite teacher back in primary school and we had a competition to see who could make their banana last the longest by sucking it slowly. Now we have realised that it was her very clever way of keeping us quiet for half an hour!

  10. Helen Boys says:

They were part of my weekly fruit salad: rhubarb and custard, pineapple chunks, sherbet lemons and foamy bananas.

  11. Gemma Harrison says:

As I child I loved all sweet but my sister only like these bananas and the shrimps, These were 2p and the shrimps 1p at our sweet shop.

  12. Luisa L says:

I loved them as a child because of their taste, look and smell, and I have to say when we go the cinema, I always pop a couple into my daughters pick and mix for me to secretly eat during the movie!

  13. Jenny says:

I loved these as a kid – I used to buy them in my 10p mix-up from the corner shop. They taste sooo good, even better when you dip them in melted chocolate and then let the chocolate harden! Yum! 🙂 x

I actually don’t like bananas, but that means my boyfriend could have these all to himself and he’d be very happy!

  17. Teresa N says:

I can remember coming out from school,
Looking at my favouites, it was bananas as a rule.
The Chewbz were so chewy and I love the yellow colour,
All the modern sweets now seem a little duller.
It’s the smell that gets me going with a taste I can’t resist,
I’d go bananas if they were not on my list.

  18. Charlotte Ali says:

These are an absolute classic, all yellow and sweet.
Their fantastic flavour is so hard to beat!
I love to take the BIGGEST bag home…
these yummy bananas with the texture of foam..

  24. Sarah Wilson says:

Aw they totally remind me of being in primary school! On the way home I would stop at the local shop and buy a couple of them for the walk home, two was always enough aswell, as they were so much bigger back then!…or was that just because my hands were smaller? Who knows! I love them!

  25. amanda egglestone says:

A long time ago, when the world was young
Someone put some food on their tong
They tasted the food, and thought it was nice
Most fruit liked it – but banana’s thought twice.

They held a meeting at quarter past eight
Whilst the human’s were getting home late
They decided they didn’t want to be eaten
they said “No way, we’re not going to be beaten”

So time went by, and human’s got old
Banana’s got ready, for their prophets had told
That soon shall come the dawn of war.
Where humans will rule the earth no more.

The humans knew not of the evil banana’s plans
They made their cars, guitars and aluminum cans
And the banana’s began to take over the east
While humans knew not, and kept having their feast.

But time has run out, no more hiding there can be
Or else the banana’s will kill George, you and me
We must take up arms, and fight to the end
Because, believe it or not, a banana is not a friend.

Good reason to eat them ALL at once 🙂

It’s my Dad’s birthday on tuesday, he’s a legend or leg end, and these would make a great belated gift for him!

  32. Sally Willcock says:

Because the children know that when I tell them I will eat them if they are naughty – it’s a promise and not an idle threat, so they tend to behave – I LOVE THEM
